Peter Michael Escovedo was born on July 6, 1966, in San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Mexican immigrants. His father was a mechanic and his mother worked as a seamstress. Escovedo grew up in a working-class neighborhood and struggled with poverty and violence.
He began playing guitar at age 12, inspired by the Beatles and other rock bands. In 1985, he released his first album, Sweet Little Angel.
